Academic Honesty Rules and Contract

The following are excerpts from the 2010-2011 Denver Jewish Day School Upper School Division Family Handbook:

2. 2.1 Academic Honesty
Students are expected to be honest. Cheating in any form is detrimental to the learning atmosphere the school strives to create and counter-productive to our mission. Academic dishonesty is considered to be a violation of the Denver JDS Upper School behavior and discipline code.

7.4 CHEATING/PLAGIARISM
Cheating is using the work or help of another on a paper, test, homework a ssignment, lab assignment or examination without the express permission of the teacher. Discussing a problem and its solution with one or more other students may be acceptable; however, borrowing or lending a finished copy of homework or a paper is not. Assisting or facilitating another student in the act of cheating is also considered to be cheating. A student who is unsure whether a given action constitutes cheating should consult the teacher

Plagiarism is a form of cheating in which one uses the words or ideas of another without giving appropriate credit to the source.

Students must also avoid the a ppearance of cheating. The appearance of cheating can be given during a test by looking around the room, speaking with others, handing something to another student, glancing at others’ papers orhaving unapproved materials in clear view. In cases of cheating, the teacher, Dean of Student and Faculty Affairs, and the Upper School Division Head will determine consequences which may include a grade of “0” with no make up opportunity, parent notification, loss of eligibility, suspension, a disciplinary report, and/or dismissal.

Academic dishonesty and cheating are unacceptable at Denver JDS. It is a violation of the disciple and behavior codes. Additionally it goes against The Middot, specifically emet and kavod.

In mathematics and science classes it can sometimes be difficult to tell whether something constitutes appropria te group work or inappropriate cheating. The following rules are meant to help clarify the difference. If there is any confusion, it is the student's responsibility to ask their instructor for clarification.

  • All work students turn in must be their own.
  • Students are NOT allowed to copy homework from another student, the internet or anywhere else.
  • Students are allowed and encouraged to work together (in the vicinity of each other) when completing homework assignments unless prohibited by the teacher.
  • Students are expected to work every step of a problem on their own.
  • Students are expected to personally plug in computations to their calculator. It is not acceptable to ask someone else to make a calculation for your homework.
  • Studen ts are allowed to discuss homework problems unless prohibited by their instructor.
  • Students are NOT allowed to discuss a problem line by line.
  • Students are allowed to compare answers unless prohibited by their teacher.
  • Borrowing or lending homework is not acceptable.
  • Plagiarism is forbidden. Students are not allow ed to turn in anyone else's wo rk as their own.
